Obtaining Maximum Value From a Snow Day

by MD on January 27, 2009

So you wake up one of these mornings and you realize that your prayers have been answered. It is an official snow day; that means no work work or school. Obviously my readers from warmer climates will never experience this but believe me you have nothing to be envious of, I would rather by laying in the sun than bundled indoors during a snow day.

Now let’s suppose it’s an extreme snow day, meaning all the roads are closed and you are pretty much stuck indoors. You could spend the whole day being lazy, but since you are reading this blog chances are that you are not the type of person that can just sit around all day. Allow me to provide you with a few suggestions to obtain the maximum value from a snow day:

Research something you have been meaning to learn about. There are many things that we all put on the backburner because we simply do not have the time or energy to focus on the task. Now since you have a snow day you have no excuse, so pull out that book or open up your web browser and learn about that topic that you really want to gain more information on. Whether it be retirement planning, real estate investment, or even a travel destination, no matter what the topic is spend your snow day learning about the subject. There are plenty of free resources on the internet so there are no reasons you can’t do the research.

Catch up on your notes. Who isn’t behind on something? It could be catching up on your blog or work that you were unable to finish the previous day at your desk. This is your opportunity to get things and make sure you are all caught up.

Prepare for an exam. The reason you prayed for a snow day is probably because you had an exam on that day and now your prayers have been answered. Don’t waste the snow day, make sure that you prepare for the exam you have missed as a result of the snow day or for a future exam.

Prepare your taxes! Yes this gets an exclamation mark because of how important it is. Make sure that you have everything organized so that when you go to file your taxes you have no discrepancies. Believe me you don’t want to miss the deadline nor do you want to miss out any information.

Although the idea of taking a lazy/sleep in/do-nothing kind of day sure does sound appealing, you make a good point to take advantage of the opportunity of the “snow day.”

One more to add to your list…catch up on blog reading!

Oh yes you definitely can not forget about reading blogs. If you really wish to be lazy then you could do some blog reading while laying on the couch.

Loved the post. I wish I had snow days… :(

Utah is FULL of snow, but they’ll never close anything down even during the worst storms! Oh well… I guess I chose to live here.

Anyway- great post. There’s all sorts of productive things that can be done on a day like that. Most people, however, probably don’t approach it so positively as you do!

Keep it up!

I used to love snow days. Now that I work there’s no such thing as a snow day. Snow days now translate into an extra 2-3 hours of driving time to commute to work. Maybe I should get “sick” on days that it snows so i can take advantage of your great ideas.

So are you saying that reading PF blog posts all day is being lazy? :)

Winter 2009 snow days – 1
Winter 2009 wind chill days – 3

Of course, I still had to work…

@Trevor It always helps to approach every situation in a postive manner or else you will never get through a day without feeling stressed.

@Steve I know what you mean there are days where my little brother laughs because he has a snow day and I find myself putting on extra layers of socks just to trek to school.

@Matt I’m not saying reading pf blog posts is lazy I’m just saying you can do it while lounging on the coach so that you can be comfortable.

In the December 2008, I got a few snow days, and I used them to:
1. Cook some interesting dishes I have always wanted to try out
2. Catch up with friends and family on phone and email
3. Read a book I have been meaning to, but didn’t have time for.

In my neck of the woods, we get hurricane-tropical storm-flood days ’stead of snow. They are usually in Sept. The thing I dislike about them is that they are unscheduled so you can’t always take a vacation. Instead, future off-days are used to make them up eating into actually planned excursions! argh!
