Though it may seem excessive, credit card establishments are lawfully have the authority to file suit not in favor of an individual who declines to make payments regarding credit card dues. The loan collector will largely likely attempt to resolve with you before pressing charges, but they will choose that if you settle not to go with them to repay your balance and reduce credit card debt.

I agree with FFB in the sense that it is very difficult for people my age to listen to elders. I really don't know what it is. I must admit that I never changed my opinion until about a few years ago. I figured that it would be in my best interest to learn from the mistakes of other people. The unfortunate thing is that most young people wait until they get to the point that they have to learn from their own mistakes.

@Stephanie - I think lot of people get a credit card with the best of intentions then find themselves sucked into the easy money available.

@Don - If young folks listened to their elders more they could avoid a lot of mistakes. But that is a hard thing to do and sometimes we have to make our own mistakes to really learn form them. It's a shame that can leave many with a ton of credit card debt though!

You're lucky that you got out of the debt trap before it was too late because where you were going is the very essence of being trapped in the "rat race."

Most people don't realize what is meant by the rat race; essentially you get into debt when you are young and then you spend the rest of your life working for money to pay off your debt.

The smart approach is to live below your means when you are young, save money, invest that money conservatively and let your money work for you.

However, how many people are that smart when they are young?

Ah, the dreaded Koosh ball tactic!

But, yeah, that's the way it goes for a lot of people. I was paying of my credit card every month for about six months before I got into trouble. And I even got the card with the sole intention of establishing a credit card and never carrying a balance! That changed when one of my student loans reached its limit and I had to make up the difference somehow...

But I guess I was a lucky one - I had the debt paid off before I graduated. Now, though, just after graduation, I'm watching some friends fall into the same trap as you, FFB. And it's not pretty. One of them has more credit card debt than I have total available credit! But each person has to decide for themselves when it's time to make a change - I hope my friend does, soon.
