Can't argue with you. I visited Montreal for the 4th time this past September and had a blast as always. I need to get in touch with you next time to find out about all of the hot spots in Montreal.

Yeah you mention the $59 bus pass in DC? A bus pass is only $35 per month in Montreal, and the public transit (e.g. subways) are better maintained and go further. You can hang out in French cafes, drink wine at 18, and party in a city filled with artists, DJs, musicians, and people from every corner of the world.

I cannot imagine a better choice for an American student than a BA at McGill.

I go to McGill, and as dave said, you don't not need to speak a word of French to get by in Montreal. I am completely fluent in English and French, however, my roommate is American and never studied French, and is having just as good of an experience here as I am.
And although I cannot speak for every university in Montreal, I know that at least at McGill although everyone likes to party, there is no problem getting work done. Everyone had to work really hard to get there, and is surrounded by people that understand the importance of getting their shit done.
Also, the weather is not that bad. Buy a coat and some boots, and you're fine--it usually stays above -20 except for a couple weeks each year.

You really don't need to know French in Montreal. Hands down the most diverse, most affordable, and craziest party seen. Plus the drinking age is 18.;)

Where's Iowa City? I mean c'mon, the Iowa River flows right through the middle of campus. How can you ignore that beauty? .... this list is too biast. of coarse towns in the midwest aren't going to compete with huge cities like d.c. and boston, or populous areas like southern california.

UC Berkeley is a state school, and while expensive for out of state people...it is a much much cheaper option than private school for Californians. Also, as a Cal Alum, the food around berkeley and SF is easily some of the cheapest and most diverse in the country (esp around campus). I lived in the DC area this past year and was shocked at how expensive it is to eat out there, especially ethnic foods. I severely missed my cheap amazing Bay Area restaurants. It is the housing cost that kills...def not food. GO BEARS!!!

very coastal biased. leaves out great midwest college towns, like madison, east lansing, state college--places that epitomize the college experience. i understand boston, but amherst isn't really a college town, its more of a town with colleges in it--there's a difference.

Where does this list come from? What is it based on? Who voted? Its a little "bi-coastal", reinforcing the provincial convential wisdom that the greatest college experiences are in the Northeast and maybe the West Coast. As a college coach in the Northeast, I find it difficult overcoming students' obstacles to exploring cities and regions beyond the obvious. My son is at Emory in Atlanta, and is one of the happiest kids from his NY-area high school class. How about the Claremont CA consortium schools? The kids in UT-Austin seem to be having fun, and so are the kids at UNC-Chapel Hill. Madison Wisconsin? Ann Arbor Michigan? College is a time to explore this great country of ours!

I agree that this list is lacking, no mention of Madison, WI? Arguably one of the best college atmospheres when it comes to academics, athletics and social activities.

GO BADGERS! :)
