At a discount retailer, you have to buy what nobody wanted before! Surely there must be a reason for that? Especially with clothes in normal sizes, it is usually quite obvious why they are still there - and heavily discounted.

I like your strategy Kari! Unfortunately, I'm far from a great shopper still. I've improved over the years but I have a long way to go in certain areas.

My first trip four years ago I booked it based on the name of the resort. Now I will do research for months before the trip. I will go on forums, contact travel agents, ask friends, compare prices, and pretty much do whatever I can to mitigate most of the risks.

In other areas I'm not so good.

Any more tips for us?

That's so true Ken. Some items you're better off with paying more to get the peace of mind. I would rather know the product is going to last longer than save a few dollars.

Hey Maren. It's all good. Most people think it's "STUD-onomics" the first time they come over here.

I'm honestly quite surprised at the idea of going out to make a substantial purchase without already having done the research to know what you want and what your needs are. Undoubtedly doing research before you shop is a much better investment of time and money -- you end up having much less pressure to decide "on the spot" in the store to get something wrong for your needs. The internet makes it easy to determine a few target items you're looking to choose from, and then examining them in person and talking to salespeople and other "experts" about which one will suit you best. Then, you don't have to pay retail -- it's worth it to finish the research to find the final chosen product at the best price available.

I'm a big fan of an intentional shopping strategy. Doing the research remotely, trying out different models or options to see which one is best, and then holding back on the purchase to find the best deal often removes the emotional element of buying -- many things I begin researching I decide I don't need, after all, and that decision ALWAYS saves me money.

Yeah...and cheaper doesn't always mean better. My wife bought some $5 barbershops trimmers and we didn't get 2 uses out of them..weak and not sharp. It pays to go with Quality on some items.
