How The Winter Can Save You Money

by MD on February 7, 2009

Here I am on a Friday night sitting at home writing a blog post. I don’t think there are too many other people my age home tonight, oh well. Well I must confess that part of the reason I am not out tonight is because the last 3 days I have been sleeping 4 hours a night due to a heavy schedule with work and school. However, the other part of the reason is fairly enviable- I am going on another vacation soon! Yes I know I just went in mid December and here I am going away again for reading week. How is this possible? Well I will discuss that in a blog post next weekend so stay tuned to find out how I managed to pay for another vacation without touching my savings!

Before I get too off topic let me jump into today’s article; how the winter can save you money: (Sorry to my Austrailian readers in the middle of a heat wave, this article’s not for you)

1. Enjoy cheap winter activities. Tobogganing or skiing at a local small hill is always a cheap way to meet up with friends while still sneaking in some physical activity to burn those calories. Going skating with that special someone and having a nice warm hot chocolate after or maybe even playing some hockey with your friends. Whatever you choose to do there are many cheap winter activities that can be very fun if you are willing to freeze a little.

2. Stay in more often. If you find that it’s so cold you can’t stand being outside then what’s the point of going to a bar where you will have to wait in line just to get in. Is it really worth leaving the warmth of your home? On cold winter nights you are better off having some friends over and staying indoors.

3. Drive less. With all of that snow on the road what’s the point of driving if you don’t have to? Many people even park their car in the winter because they know it will too much of a hassle to try driving it. You could save so much money on gas by simply not driving as often.

4. Work more often. If outdoor activities are not for you and you’re tired of staying sulking at home all the time then work more hours. Find an additional job or work more shifts at your current job. As long as you keep yourself busy you will forget about the dreadful weather that you are hoping will come to  an end soon.

I hope many of you sitting at home this weekend can relate to this article and I am curious to know one thing though. Does the winter save you money like it does for me or does it cost you more money than the other seasons?

Thanks For Getting This Far

Winter costs me money because I do not work out as often and I get lazy and that affects everything else that I do.

People need to get out more. So whatever it takes to get your backside off the sofa and out into some fresh air, no matter how cold, is a good thing

@Vik Dulat Believe me I know how you feel I tend to be very lazy during the winter myself. Last winter I did not get much accomplished. This is in fact the first winter where I am working hard to ensure that I stay productive and so far I have been luck to avoid any severe periods of laziness.

I know someone who spends most of her time indoors making scarves and hats, and then selling them during winter. So, not only can winter save you money, it can help you make some too.
