Okay I really can't wait to get my new thesis design setup. Why? Because I can reply to individual comments instead of this one bulk reply.

Everyone nailed the key concept right on the head- save money on bs, spend it on the fun stuff. I love my personal finance books, gym memberships, and vacations. I will save on other areas so that I can have more money towards these areas. We all have junk we can cut. It's simply a matter of identifying this junk and eliminating it.

This is such an awesome perspective, because when we typically cut back on extra expenses, the things that mean a lot to us in our free time often go with it. Whether that's dancing lessons, model ships, even computers and technology for some, we can't cut that off completely, or whatever we're doing just doesn't seem worth it anymore.

Hey, great points!

I noticed you were reading IWTYTBR. I think one of my favorite lines that Ramit mentions a lot is to spend lavishly on the things you want and to cut costs mercilessly on the things you don't care about.

Cool blog. Keep up the good work!

I like what you say about the difference between spending money on Travel and a $7 drink. I feel the same but just about different things. I think everyone is "cheap" about something, but I think it is very important to enjoy life also. Saving money is important but saving with no enjoyment is not a good way to live.

Good Post.

Those extreme budgeting plans just aren't any good. It's much better to do as you say and find things that you can cut out without living like a hermit and hating your life.

One thing I used to do is always stop by a fast food restaurant on the way home late at night when I'm somewhat hungry. It always made me feel somewhat sick and was never worth the money. Now I just have a stash of "snacks" in the form of fruits, granola bars, etc. that I will have one of that gets rid of the hunger, bad feeling, and saves me $5.

Focus on your savings first and spend the rest. Once all your bills are paid off, and hopefully your automatic savings are set, the rest is yours, spend however.
