Once again this tip list is unofficial simply because tipping is very subjective and there are no boundaries. This is just a list of people that I have tipped while on vacation here in Montego Bay. A quick side note, prior to departing for my vacation I was in Buffalo for a day so I went out my way to get 40 $1 dollar bills. This way when I tip someone I toss them a dollar or two and I find that $40 is plenty enough to last you a week in tips. Anyways onto my unofficial all inclusive vacation tip list.
Front Desk Staff. When you are checking into your room these are the most important people. If you are nice to them and give them a few dollars chances are you will be accommodated as you wish in terms of a room. For this vacation we booked well in advanced and specifically requested an ocean view room. On other vacations when I disliked my room I tipped the front desk staff a few dollars and requested a better room, which always worked out with no issues.
Bell Boy. Whatever the proper term for the job is all that matters is that these are the workers that drive you to your room or bring your luggage to your room. I feel it is very respectful to tip a couple of dollars for their hard work. We also had to tip them a few times for abusing our bell boy privileges when we asked for a ride at night time back to the room after too many drinks.
Waiter. For breakfast, lunch and dinner we tend to eat a different restaurant (that`s 5 start treatment) and each time we have received very quick service and complete respect. Some of the waiters have gone out of their way to learn our names and get to know us. I like to leave a couple of dollars after each meal to show I appreciate how quickly and hard they work.
Bartender. This is a no brainer because you always tip bartenders. I hate tipping bartenders here in Toronto because it costs $6 for a watered down drink and they expect tips. On vacation the bartenders tend be friendlier, and they seem as if they truly appreciate you being there. I tend to give a dollar at the beginning of the night and another few more near the end. I tend to become a bit more generous the more I drink, so maybe that`s why the drinks are so strong.
Room Maid. I usually tip the maid $10 at the beginning of the vacation and a dollar every day. I find that the better you treat the maid the better they will treat your room. Every vacation that I have tipped the maid I have noticed that my room mini fridge receives many beers each day, there are plenty of towels in the washrooms, and on occasion they have made some unique designs of towels and left them on the bed.
Beach Staff. Alright this may sound odd but the other day I tipped one of the beach workers $50. This may sound crazy but believe it or not he saved my life. Long story short, I was kayaking when a few big waves came along and pushed me very very far away from the beach. I was so far and the current was so strong that it was pretty much impossible to go against it. It just kept on pushing me further and further away from the beach. I ended up so far away and after 1 hour of struggling, the sun got to me and I had absolutely no energy left. I said a prayer and told myself that if someone comes to save me I will pay them. After another 20 minutes one of the beach workers came on a speed boat to bring me back to shore. I was grateful that I kept my promise and returned to the beach with $50 to hand the worker who could not believe my generosity.
I could think of more people to tip but it`s time to enjoy my last little while here. I am not a big fan of tipping but I feel that if I could afford a vacation at a 5 start resort then I could definitely afford $40 to bring for tips. Also the workers on resorts are paid very poorly and they work very hard for their tips, so why not reward them. If you have anything you add to this list or comments on vacation then please feel free to do so!
