Do you know where your credit card is? Do you know who has your credit card number? Has your credit card number been stolen?
I was a victim of credit card fraud a few months back. Some random person in Europe ended up using my card to use thing’s I don’t even want to think about online. My credit card company flagged this huge purchase immediately, called me, and cancelled my credit card. Luckily, everything was dealt with and I was able to move on with my life with a new credit card number.
The Friday before I left for vacation, a buddy of mine lost his credit card at the bar. He got upset with me for some reason because I saw that it was on the table. The problem is that when I saw it at the table he was beside his credit card. I looked a few minutes later to find that him and the credit card were gone. I figured he took it with him. It turns out that the credit card was picked up by someone strolling by. He ended up getting upset with everyone at the table. I told him that it was his fault for leaving a piece of plastic around and the easiest solution would be to simply call the credit card company to see if it had been used.
Then the other day when I was looking through headlines, I noticed an interesting story on finding your own stolen credit card number. According to CBS News a front desk clerk at a gas station noticed something odd when she saw a classmate buying gas with a credit card. The card belonged to her mother! The store clerk recognized the 19 year old right away when he was trying to buy gas. She didn’t expect to find out that he was using her mother’s credit card though.
I’ve written about student credit cards in the past, but never from this angle. Talk about dumb criminals.
Do you know where your credit card is?
Apparently stolen credit card numbers are in high demand. Due to obvious reasons, criminals are always looking to buy real credit card numbers. We often hear about these stories on the news or read about them. We just can’t imagine it happening to us. If it can happen to a cool personal finance blogger, it can happen to you.
If someone steals your credit card out of your wallet or wherever youre storing it, then there’s not much that you could have done. I could preach to you about how you should be more careful next time, but stuff happens. I will say one thing on the topic though.
Since there’s big money in stolen credit card numbers it makes to repeat that you should be looking over your credit card bill. Not everyone wants to check their bank balance online frequently because there’s just better things to do out there. You definitely need to check your balance once in a while. If you notice anything is different at all then you need to deal with this immediately. The good news is that most credit card companies are pretty easy to deal with. Most credit card issues can be resolved with just one phone call.
To conclude, do you know who has your credit card number?
