If you’ve ever made a dollar on your own, you know how empowering (awesome) it feels to be in control of your income. I’ll still never forget the first time I got paid $20 to put an ad up here.
Since I love freelancing so much, I’ve been spending time recently writing about freelance work and making extra money on your own. In doing my research, I’ve been reading The $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau, The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss, Crush it! by Gary Vaynerchuk, and a few other books on the topic because we all need inspiration once in a while.
In my research I’ve unveiled one little secret that will help you make more money freelancing. It’s nothing that you don’t already know. It’s just an idea that you need to be reminded of constantly.
This secret is different than my freelancing tip that I shared the other week with you.
What’s this secret?
The one thing that you need to know about freelancing is that you have to help people. You have to solve real problems. Essentially, you have to find people that want to have real problems solved.
There are certain things that we want more of (money, time, sex, and happiness). Then there are things that we want less off (stress, uncertainty, anxiety, and hassle).
To find out what customers truly you want, you can ask the following question:
What’s your biggest problem?
That’s a legitimate question. This is what you should be asking your freelancing clients and potential clients. I’ve wasted far too much time on trying to convince people that they have a problem that needs to be resolved. You need to find those that are looking for solutions.
If you’re a college student on break this is an excellent opportunity for you to get some experience and to make some money on the side. If you’re a young professional, sick of your current situation, you can use freelancing to test your business ideas out once and for all.
I don’t want you to quit your job to go full-time just yet. I just want to help you make more money and to be good at what you do. When you become well-known in your field, then you get the clients and the money.
The truth is that starting an online business or freelancing more money is easier than ever because the barrier to entry is barely even there.
What is the barrier to entry these days? All you usually need is a website (if that) or a service to offer, a way to get paid, and customers. The problem is that the lack of barriers to entry has made it easy for all sorts of charlatans to enter the freelancing world. The difference between you and them is that you’re here to solve real problems.
I hope that you can take a few minutes to check out my freelancing income challenge for this summer. Let’s do this together!
Are you ready to start making money on your own? You better be or I just wasted my time with helping you.
